Ag lime is an acid-soluble material that is applied to cropland to raise the pH of acidic soils. It comes in many forms including calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ), magnesium carbonate (MgCO 3 ) and others.

The purity of an agricultural lime is expressed as its calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) equivalence. This is a measure of the amount of acid a given weight of the material will neutralize compared to pure calcium car-bonate. Pure calcium carbonate has an equivalence of 100%; lime with higher magnesium content (dolomitic) will have a higher calcium

Because each molecule of magnesium carbonate is lighter than calcium carbonate, limestones containing magnesium carbonate (dolomite) can have a CCE greater than 100 percent. Because the acids in soils are relatively weak, agricultural limestones must be ground to a small particle size to be effective.

If so, which type? Wikipedia tells me that "agricultural lime is" mainly calcium carbonate (CaCO3). However, the lime I've got my hands on is "slaked lime," i.e. calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH)2), the by-product of acetylene gas. Thus it's mixed with a bit of calcium carbide (CaC2) as well. What do you think? Will my worms appreciate it? Thank you,

Calcium is not only a secondary nutrient required for plant growth, but also responsible for soil characteristics. Numerous soil characteristics intertwine with the calcium balances within our soils.

23.01.2020The term agricultural lime, or "aglime," usually refers to crushed limestone. Limestone (calcium carbonate) is not the same as hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide). What materials are usually used as agricultural lime? An agricultural material is defined as a material whose Ca and Mg compounds are capable of neutralizing soil acidity.

09.04.2015So what is lime and how does it work? materials are typically oxides (O 2- ), hydroxides (OH - ), carbonates (CO 32-) or silicates (SiO 44−) of calcium (Ca) or magnesium (Mg). Some examples (with their chemical formulae) are calcitic lime (CaCO 3 ), dolomitic lime (CaMg (CO 3) 2, quick lime (CaO), and hydrated lime (Ca (OH) 2 ).

Acid soils cause significant losses in production and biomass, which restricts the ability to sequester carbon. Applying agricultural lime to these problem soils can correct acidity levels that restrict root growth and crop and pasture production.

Ground limestone is mostly calcium carbonate and generally less than 1–6% magnesium. When calcitic (CaCO 3) or dolomitic lime [Ca Mg (CO 3) 2] is added to soil, they hydrolyze (decompose in water) to a strong base: calcium hydroxide—Ca (OH) 2 —and carbonic acid—H 2 CO 3 —a weak acid. CaCO3 + 2H2O ⇒ Ca (OH)2 + H2CO3
